01 September 2015, Hyderabad: Confederation of Indian Industry had its First Meeting of CII National Committee on Backward District Development here today.
Speaking with the Committee Members, Mr. K TarakaRama Rao, Minister for IT & Panchayat Raj, Government of Telangana opined that there is a need to align our priorities for development for which the Government is focusing on convergence of approaches through constant interaction between various stakeholders of development. “One good example of this convergence approach is the prestigious Drinking Water Project, for which we need to make underground pipelines and at the same time we are also laying Fibre optic grid along with the pipeline”, he said.
As a Panchayat Raj Minister, Mr. Rao also emphasised the importance of devolving power and empowering villages. “Through GramaJyothi initiative, each village must come up with a plan of action for next few years and converge various sources of income to achieve the set plan” he said.
The Minister justified the Union Government for scraping the initiatives of Backward Region Grant Fund (BRGF) and Integrated Action Plan (IAP) for Backward and Tribal Districts, which provide funding towards Backward Regions. “Instead of BRGF and IAP, the Government offered 10% devolution in the last Budget to the States, to use the resources as per the State priorities.
The Minister also touched upon various other issues, which have significance for inclusive development and where the Industry can play an important role - Drinking Water, Urban Forestry, School Infrastructure, Health & Social Welfare, Waste Management, Sanitation besides others. “The State has given priority to ensuring power supply to all and improving the basic infrastructure across the state”
Mr. Sunil Deoras, Chairman, CII National Council on Backward District Development & Managing Director, TRF Ltd. briefed the Minister about various activities taken by the Committee over the years.
